Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It affects one in five people, and prevalence increases with age.

• Fasting hyperglycemia —Insulin resistance and or Type II diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Central obesity (also known as visceral, male-pattern or apple-shaped adiposity)
• Decreased HDL cholesterol
• High LDL cholesterol
• Elevated triglycerides
• Prothrombotic state: meaning increase fibrinogen levels which can cause clotting
• Pro-inflammatory state: often measure using a Cardiac C-Reactive Protein

What causes this syndrome? Metabolic syndrome has several causes that contribute. You can control some of the causes, such as:overweight and obesity, an inactive lifestyle, and insulin resistance.

Other causes such as growing older can't be controlled. Your risk of metabolic syndrome increases with age. Genetics, can't be controlled which may play a role in causing metabolic syndrome. For example, genetics can increase your risk of insulin resistance, which can lead to metabolic syndrome.

conditions:excessive blood clotting
constant, low-grade inflammation throughout the body.

It's not known whether these conditions cause metabolic syndrome or worsen it. Researchers continue to study conditions that may play a role in metabolic syndrome, such as: A fatty liver (excess triglycerides and other fats in the liver) Polycystic ovarian syndrome (a tendency to develop cysts on the ovaries) Gallstones Breathing problems during sleep (such as sleep apnea)
